Kayaking 8/9- Red River with Ethan

Red River with Ethan                                       11.6 miles
78degrees up to 89degrees, Porter's Chapel to Red River Canoe, 3.9 mph avg speed, 3:46 elapsed paddling time
Ethan finished his work this week and had Friday free so we headed over to the Red River.  We've discovered during the pandemic that the rivers are much busier on the weekends.  We're lucky that we're able to kayak during the week.  We put in at Porter's Chapel Road and kayaked down to Red River Canoe Rental.  We didn't see the cows today.  We did seem to follow one heron down the river for quite awhile.  And at one point, we saw a large bird flying overhead with a white head.  I'd like to think it was an eagle, Scotty thought it may have been an owl.  But, this time, it was not one of the nasty buzzards that we so often see.  We ate lunch in our 'secret creek'.  The river was low so we weren't able to kayak very far up into the creek.  Beautiful blue skies, fairly calm river, relaxed and happy kayakers - all while the world is going to heck!!!!

Kayaking 8/3- Piney River with Paddling Buds

Piney River with Paddling Buds                                                       5 miles
Me, Scotty, Laurie, Jack, Barbara, Christina (her birthday)

We met up at Piney Creek Campground.  The weather was unbelievable for August.  It was in the high 80's and blue, blue skies with white puffy clouds.  After shuttling vehicles to the take out, we took our kayaks down the ramp.  They have a nice, wooden ramp where you can put your kayak into the groove and maneuver it down the fairly steep hill.  From here, you have to walk your kayak down a shallow creek which leads into the Piney River.  It was an absolutely gorgeous paddle - the water in this river is always so clear and sparkling.  We passed a sign that cautioned about 2 upcoming challenging spots.  The group of us were all experienced and we had no problems at all.  We stopped at a gravel bar, ate and waded into the water.  The water was cold!  We finished the paddle, admiring the rock bluffs that line this river.  We couldn't have asked for a better day!

Kayak 7/29- Red River - Moooove out of the way!

Red River                                                                       11.1 miles
Me & Scotty
Beautiful Day - high 80's, water level 5.5 feet

The weather was good, the level was high, and we were ready!  Beautiful, blue skies.  Today the cows were in the water again.  I was able to paddle over and one stayed in the water for a photoshoot!  She loved the water as much as we did today!

Kayak 7/14- Red River - Catching Up

Red River - Catching Up                                                                  8.6 miles
Me, Scotty, Beatrix
water level 6.5 feet, avg speed 3.8 mph, 2:20 minutes paddling time

I was able to connect with Beatrix and we headed to our local go-to river, the Red River.  It was a great day for paddling and Beatrix and I were able to catch up on family, life, the pandemic and the opening of schools which is looming over her head and every school staff person.  It was nice thinking she had this one day of relief before heading into a year of uncertainty.
