Providence Canyon

We’re camping at Florence Marina State Park, which is literally in the middle of nowhere. The nearest restaurant is listed as about nine or 10 miles away. The campsite itself is very nice. It’s small with about four roads and we are in the middle in a pull through site, site number 21 there are plenty of trees here, and if you’re coming for the water, it’s just a short distance from the marina. After quickly setting up the trailer, we packed a lunch and headed to Providence Canyon State Park, which is our reason for coming to this area of Georgia. Providence Canyon is considered the Grand Canyon of Georgia. It’s absolutely spectacular and not at all what you would expect in this state, apparently it was formed from poor farming practices back in the 1920s when the water runoff formed these canyons. There is a rim trail that goes around the nine canyons and from the trail you can go down into the Gulley the deepest part being 150 feet  at the top is a sign where there was a homestead and there are still old cars sitting there. The cars are from the 1950s and they have not been removed because it could be detrimental to the environment and also there bio systems set up within the cars. From the rim at the top, we could already see beautiful views, emphasized by the colors of the canyons, which range from deep red to white to light, purple to pink, all highlighted against today’s vivid blue sky, and the green pine trees around. The bottom of the canyon Has a trail of that red clay mud which is mostly covered in water, so be prepared to get wet shoes. The main trail leads off into little branches into each of the nine canyons we found canyons four and five and three to be the most spectacular if you’ve never heard of Providence Canyon , and you’re close to the area, I highly recommend that you spend a day getting there and then hiking the trail.
