Hiking - Garden of the Gods, Illinois

We arrived at Oak Point Campground at 12:00 where campsites are first come, first served. There were 3 campsites left and we took site 28, a large, beautiful trees lot, 2 sites down from the bathhouse. It’s a beautiful campground  with 3 campground loops. It’s located within the Shawnee National Forest. Because I’m now an official old lady with a Batio Senior Park Pass, our cost was $16 instead of $22.

After lunch, we headed to the Garden of the Gods. It’s listed as a 1/4 mile hike, but our trackers showed we hiked 1.1 miles in 43 minutes. It just can’t be 1/4 mile because there are rock formations surrounding the path just begging to be climbed. I wasn’t brave enough to do all of the rocks, but was thrilled with the ones I did climb. From the rocks, you can see out over the Garden of the Gods Wilderness which is about 3,300 acres.  This land is protected by the 1964 Wilderness Act. I’m so happy for acts and laws that protect our lands!
