Hiking - Mammoth Cave, KY

 Mammoth Cave, Kentucky             3.6 miles

It was 48 degrees when we woke so we took our time getting ready and eating breakfast. We got to Mammoth Cave and I finally got my lifetime Senior Pass! WooHoo, finally a benefit for being old. Now that we have a trailer, it will really help as it means half price on camping fees for national parks and some other parks, and some other visitors discounts in participating parks.

Apparently, Mammoth Cave was closed for 2 1/2 months during Covid and now that they’re open, they are still taking precautions. We listened to a park ranger and then toured the cave at our own pace, rather than traveling as a group with a guide. I think I like this way better and there are rangers posted at significant spots where you can ask questions. There are also signs throughout the cave.

River Styx Spring Trail

This is the ‘Old Guide’s Cemetery’. It probably began as a slave cemetery, and includes guides, Dr John Croghan (an original owner) and visitors.

To the left is the tombstone of Stephen Bishop. He was one of the original, black guides and had an extensive background of the caves and trails and published a book. His tombstone was purchased by a park visitor some 20 years after his death. It sounds like a nice gesture, but it was an ‘extra Union’ tombstone and Stephen Bishop was not a soldier. This is the ‘Old Guide’s Cemetery’.

Our visit coincided with a tribute to women in the National Park Service.
These were some of the posters done by students.
