We drove to Rothenburg and had a difficult time finding a parking spot because as expected it was full of tourists. We called our hotel and we were able to park in their private lot but couldn’t check in till later, which was fine. We walked around Rosenberg and thoroughly enjoyed reminiscing prior visits. We did notice a few changes, such as the McDonald’s was gone and KathevWolfart’s has many stores around town. when we lived here I often made it a habit to buy an ornament in the store. This time rather than an ornament I bought a small cow smoker as cows seem to have been prominent in this year‘s trip. We bought a bratwurst with sauerkraut from a metzgerei and we both agreed it was an absolutely delicious wurst. We were able to relax in our room before we went out for a light meal and then met the night watchmen for a tour. It was a fabulous tour as he was a very good storyteller and we learned many things about the medieval ages. for example we learned that there is a small door within the door of the gates into the city. The night watchmen patrolled the city from dusk until dawn and was considered one of the lowest people in the city, After the executioner in the undertaker. These he called manholes and they were used for the people that came in late into the city – they were big enough just for one man to get through and not for more Who may be invading. Rittenberg started as a rich town as it was located between two highly travel cross traveled trade routes. Neighboring cities such as Nuremberg and Würzburg often tried to invade Rothenberg and they were mini wars as well as the plague throughout the centuries Which eventually turned Rothenberg into a poor town. The wall turned out to be to the cities advantage as it was never knocked down because the people were too poor to do that. So once again the city became rich when tourism came to the city. We are glad to do our part.
