Kayaking - Silver Spring River

6 miles, 2.5 avg speed, 6.0 max speed, 3:06 elapsed time, low 80s

We drove over to Silver Spring State park and dropped off the kayaks. Scotty drove over to drop off his bike while Benji and I walked on the boardwalk inside the gardens. We noticed that the river and the gardens were very crowded today and we only realized later that it was Presidents’ Day. It’s tough being retired and not being able to keep up with the calendar. BenjiBear did much better today in the kayak. He rode the first half with me and the second half with Scotty. We paddled down a couple miles to the Silver Spring State Park dock and had our lunch along with many other retirees and many other teenagers. It was a busy spot. As usual we saw lots of wildlife on the river: alligators, cormorants, manatees, turtles, birds, and one big fat snake. It was another beautiful day – blue skies, a few white clouds, Caribbean blue water and a gentle flow to the river.
