Hiking - Dickson Falls

It’s always best to be prepared for a hike — and yet, this was not one of those days. With no internet to check the details ahead of time, I just assumed we were heading to a run-of-the-mill waterfall (if there is such a thing). So I left my big camera behind. Scotty figured it was a short walk, so he skipped the long pants and surprisingly forgot the mosquito spray and his backpack. That’s a first! To be fair, we didn’t need the backpack… but the mosquito spray? Definitely missed.

As for the hike itself? Let’s just say it surprised us — in the best way. The waterfall was pretty, but what made this trail truly special was the brook below it. Winding through a steep valley between two cliffs, the brook felt almost enchanted. The entire trail can be seen from a well-built boardwalk, allowing us to gaze down at a living painting: small cascading waterfalls, reflections in the small pools, many lichen covered stones and thick, lush ferns in every direction.

There was even a noticeable temperature drop as we descended into the ravine. At the bottom, the thermometer read 14°C (about 58°F). At the top — we think it had been closer to 62°F in the truck. That cool, damp air added to the almost mystical atmosphere of the place. I honestly don’t think I’ve ever seen a brook quite like this one — not just the water, but the entire scene. It was peaceful, dramatic, and alive. We took the shorter path in and looped back the longer way. Altogether, it was only about a 1-mile hike, but full of wonder. If anyone ever visits Fundy National Park, I would absolutely recommend the Dickson Falls Trail. Just… don’t forget the bug spray.
