Hiking - Cholerenschlucht

Choleren Gorge is a hidden gem compared to the more well-known hikes in the Bern area. We parked along the roadside and followed the path down and back up again. The trail was part paved, part gravel, with many steps built into the terrain. Crossing the first bridge, we were struck by the sheer volume of crystal-blue water rushing through the gorge—a breathtaking sight.

Inside the gorge, sturdy metal walkways cling to the rock walls, allowing you to walk right above the roaring water. At one point, the trail climbs steeply up long sets of stairs, including a spiral staircase, which added to the adventure.

Along the way, we stopped at a little farm stand where Swiss cheese was sold straight from a refrigerator. I love Swiss hikes!!

The gorge has suffered damage in the past, once in 2011 and again later, but it has been restored. There’s no entrance fee, though donations are requested at the end, which we gladly contributed. It’s a fantastic hike—we ended up hiking 2.1 miles. It’s unique, thrilling, and one I would highly recommend.
