We bought our gondola tickets to Oeschinensee at the front desk, where they asked us to check back in on our return so they could keep track of the Scouts/guests staying there. Before heading up, we stopped in town at the pharmacy because my knee was still swollen from yesterday’s hike with all its steep ascents and descents. We had a bit of a translation issue at first, but then I spotted Aleve on the shelf. When I asked about it, the pharmacist explained it was stronger than Tylenol - perfect. It’s interesting that in Switzerland, even basic pain relievers like Tylenol are kept behind the counter at pharmacies. I wonder how that practice affects the overall health of Swiss people.
We rode the gondola up the mountain with a temperature of 44°F, though it didn’t feel nearly that cold. From the top, it’s only about half a mile to the lake, and when we arrived, we were delighted to see cows grazing freely all around. Naturally, I had to take photos—probably far too many photos—before we began the path that climbs above the lake. Oeschinensee is every bit as breathtaking as we remembered, with scenery that makes you pause constantly for pictures. On our overseas trips, we rarely return to the same place twice, but this was our second visit here—a testament to just how beautiful it is.
We found a grassy spot just below the huts and stopped for lunch, a more perfect picnic spot hard to imagine. Afterward, we headed back down, stopping yet again for photos (and yes, the cows were still there, so of course I took more). It was an absolutely gorgeous day from start to finish.
Back in Kandersteg, we enjoyed a barbecue dinner—chicken, pork or beef, potatoes, and salad. Sadly, we were too slow to snag a donut for dessert. We chatted with a few Scouts, watched the others laughing and playing, and then headed back to our room, tired but content after such a wonderful day.
